160 Years in the Making

Welcome to the inaugural Yale Asian Alumni Reunion!

In 1854, Yung Wing became Yale's first Asian alumnus. Today, some 15,000 alumni representing the many diverse cultures and perspectives of the Asian and Asian American community have joined him in making that journey. Come to New Haven to celebrate the achievements and legacies of Yale's vibrant Asian community and to renew our commitment to shaping the future at Yale and beyond.

Program highlights include:

  • Keynotes with PepsiCo Chairman and CEO, Indra K. Nooyi '80 MPPM and returning U.S. Ambassador to China Hon. Gary Locke '72
  • A Conversation with Tony Award-Winning Playwright David Henry Hwang '83 DRA
  • State of the University Address by President Peter Salovey '86 PhD
  • Alumni perspectives from:
    • Rob Bonta '93, '98 JD, California's first Filipino American state legislator
    • Chris Lee '80, renowned film producer (Jerry Maguire, Superman Returns, White Frog)
    • Don Nakanishi '71, Director Emeritus of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center
  • Student curated “Living History Project: Asians at Yale” and Pan-Asian Cultural Show
  • Gala Dinner with Vijay Iyer '92, Jazz Pianist/Composer and 2013 MacArthur Fellow

By happy chance, the acronyms for the Yale Asian Alumni Reunion (YAAR) and the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni (AAAYA), together “YAAR AAAYA,” loosely translate in Hindi to “Friend, you've come.” This is exactly what we hope to be saying to you in April as friends old and new unite to reconnect with Yale and each other.

Register for this ground-breaking event, and we promise you will leave with many new yaars!

Experiences

Our Agenda

We have an exciting agenda planned that will allow you to both relive the glory days back at school and discover what fellow Asian alums are doing in the world today. Additionally, you'll gain a deeper perspective into how the Asian community has grown at Yale and how it will continue to evolve with the growth of Yale as a school. We'll dialogue about the current state of Asians in politics with top policy makers, get the backstage scoop from amazing talents in drama and music, and hear the thoughts of a CEO that runs one of the largest companies in the world.

Beyond the exciting program, we invite you to meet new friends and share your stories with each other - it is those individual connections that make all of our relationships so rich. We have all gained so much from our collective experiences at Yale (and beyond!) and we want to create an atmosphere that facilitates such sharing and storytelling.

Come Meet...

Old Friends

Come to the Reunion and see old friends from your time at Yale. Those connections you made during your 4 years are everlasting - coming back will rekindle old bonds, reignite new dreams and remind you how amazing it is to be with old friends.

New Friends

We're expecting alumni to attend from every year and every corner of the planet! Come meet new friends and share stories of how Yale has changed and how Yale has stayed the same over the generations.

New Yalies

The Reunion will be hosted while classes are in session and we will have current students involved in helping out. Meet our latest Yalies, marvel at how amazing they are, and become a mentor to the next generation of Yale alumni.
